So if our pill doesn’t work…then you must be crazy.

And what are we if we don’t take it?

Truth be told, I never used to have a problem falling asleep or staying asleep. Didn’t matter how much sleep I got either; I’d wake up feeling completely rested.

In fact, I could lay my head down on the pillow and be out in seconds. At home or traveling…hot or cold temperature, light or dark in the room…didn’t matter; Mr. Sandman came to me in seconds. That guy sleeping on the airplane through all that turbulence…that was me.

But that all ended last year...

How I saved my daughters life

It was an ordinary Friday night, my youngest daughter, Sophie, crawled into bed with us. This was something my wife Chris and I became accustomed to over the years with raising 4 kids. The usual routine was for me to put the kids back into their beds as I always could fall back asleep after such disturbance and my wife couldn’t.

I look at the clock to see it’s 1:00 am.

For some reason, this night I just rolled back over and went back to sleep…not returning Sophie to her room.

Next thing I know I’m awakened by my daughter shaking in my back, I look at the clock it was 4:45…she must be dreaming I thought. I called her name for her to stop but it continued. At this point my wife and I were both awake and I turned on a light.

Sophie was having a seizure.

She came out of it after what seemed like an eternity, when in reality it was about 45 seconds, we rushed her to the hospital and they ran the gamut of tests. All tests came back normal and we were sent home being told that 95% of kids will have a seizure and never have another.

Sophie had 2 more seizures that day.

The nights that followed were pretty sleepless. And you can imagine how difficult it was for a 6 year old to fall asleep again since she now associated sleep with seizures.

Sophie slept in our bed the first week (against doctors orders) and we were up at every twitch and whimper. When we moved her back to her room we went ahead and installed a video monitor (again, against Doctors orders).

This was supposed to give us peace of mind so we could rest, but the sleepless nights continued. Needless to say, one sleepless night ran into the next and before you knew it my wife and I were months into it getting by on little or no sleep.

We were physically and mentally exhausted.

I knew something had to change.

I took this time to monitor myself to see what I was doing now compared to what I was doing when I could fall asleep. You might say that it’s obvious why we weren’t sleeping and who could blame us under those circumstances.

And you’d be right.
